Part of the dental implant process is meeting with your dentist for a consultation. They’ll examine your oral structure and, based on their findings, make recommendations that will help promote the success of your treatment. All of that probably sounds well and good, but what does it mean if your implant dentist says you should get a bone graft?
Keep reading, and you’ll learn all about this preliminary procedure and why you might need one before getting dental implants.
What is A Bone Graft?
If you don’t know what a bone graft is, don’t worry – it’s not exactly a routine dental treatment. Basically, this is when a seasoned dentist takes bone material from one source (like another area of your body, from another species, or from a synthetic substance) and “adds” it to your jawbone.
The process requires them to make a small incision in your gumline, carefully fill it with the bone material, secure it in place with a special membrane, and then suture the incision closed. Rest assured, you’ll receive local or general anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the treatment.
Why Would I Need a Bone Graft?
If your implant dentist is recommending a bone graft as part of your dental implant plan, it’s likely because your jawbone is too thin to support the implant posts.
Unlike dentures, which rest on top of the gumline, dental implants are embedded in the jawbone, much like natural teeth. A thin mandible won’t be able to properly fuse with the biocompatible posts, and the implants will become loose and can cause serious complications. So, by adding mass to your jawbone with a bone graft, you can avoid these risks altogether!
What to Expect After Your Bone Graft
You’ll likely have to wait between three and six months for the grafting material to merge with your jawbone. If you notice little white granules coming from the graft site, don’t panic – this is actually considered normal! You may also experience some soreness, so it’s a good idea to have ibuprofen or Tylenol on hand.
Your implant dentist will give you thorough aftercare instructions to help make sure your recovery progresses smoothly, but don’t hesitate to call them if you have any questions or concerns. When the time is right, they’ll have you return to the office to start your dental implant restoration!
